Matisse-Godon, New-York – Tahiti

The Matisse museum in northern France regularly invites contemporary artists to enter into a dialogue with its permanent collections. It latest show, subtitled Architecture du rêve, gave local artist Alain Godon carte blanche on the theme of travel. It was inspired by Matisse’s journey to Tahiti in 1930, evoked in the cut-out works of the artist’s latter years. London-based Godon, once a graffiti artist, presents apparently simplistic paintings, characterised by vivid colours and outlines defined by thin black strokes. Among the 150 works on display are 49 drawings, 10 sculptures and five original installations. Matisse, one of the 20th century’s most revolutionary artists, was born in Le Cateau- Cambrésis. He founded the museum in 1952 by donating 82 works.
